Third Annual World Cup College Quidditch 2009It was such fun to read about the Quidditch team just formed at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.   I was so excited to find that many other colleges in New England and across the United States have Quidditch teams, starting with the first team formed by students at Middlebury College in Vermont in 2005.   Some of the other colleges that have formed teams in the Boston area are Harvard, Emerson, Boston College and Boston University.  Yes and also Brown University in Rhode Island also has a new team starting!

Middlebury College is hosting the Third Annual Quidditch World Cup  tomorrow,  Oct. 25th, with 26 established college and university teams planning to compete.  The teams follow the official rules issued by the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association (IQA) which is also based at Middlebury College.

Four Chasers per side must score the Quaffle, a volleyball, into a hoop, while the Keeper defends against them. Two Beaters per team throw Bludgers — dodge balls — at the Chasers. If hit, Chasers must drop the Quaffle and run back around their own goal before rejoining play.  The “Golden Snitch” — in Rowling’s books a tiny, winged, golden ball that darts about the field at high speed — actually takes human form in the muggle version. A cross-country runner wearing all yellow plays the part. The Seeker can “catch” the Snitch and end the game for 50 points by grabbing a flag from the runner’s hip, as in flag football.

Watch the Third Annual Quidditch World Cup live on the webcast Oct. 25th starting at 9:00 am, looks like there are games all day til 6:00pm!  Teams are competing from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Virginia colleges and universities.

The Tufts students are just starting up their team and will not be competing in the World Cup, for this year anyway.  For now they are just having some fun and enjoying the fresh air and exercise while they play the muggle version of JK Rowling’s imaginative sport.

This looks exhausting, but if I was in college I would definitely join in the fun!
